Care + Wear

Çuval products are made with the finest natural and found materials available; including  vegetable-tanned leather, suede, nubuck and canvas.

All our materials are from Turkey and of the highest quality and all our products become more beautiful over time and are intended to be enjoyed by generations yet to come, especially when maintained with loving care.

Our vegetable tanned leather supplier has deep-rooted passion for tanning since 1927 using antique recipes including natural extracts and fat liquors.  Our supplier for nubuck is a boutique factory established in 1980, who uses only domestic raw materials instead of importing.

Vegetable tanning is the oldest, purist, and most natural method of processing leather. Our suppliers still use only full grain %100 vegetable tanned leather that uses no harmful chemicals and dyes in their production.

Naked finish vegetable tanned leather is leather without any pigment in its natural state. It will darken by sunlight, heat and sweat which will nicely age the leather over time through wear.

Nubuck leather is highly distinctive with its gorgeously tactile texture and beauty. This is the result of the extra processing step where it is sanded and buffed in order to create its velvety look and feeling.

Leather is an inconsistent material with its own unique markings and irregularities that are natural characteristics and should not be considered as defects. In Neu Land collection we use leather in its most original state with raw cuts leaving unlined as a preference for emphasizing our local craftsmanship. High quality and especially natural leather products require modest maintenance.

Canvas is an extremely durable plain-woven fabric used for making sails, tents and popularly used by artists as a painting surface typically stretched across a wooden frame. From the 13th century onward, canvas was used as a cover for a shield type then became the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. All canvas we use is woven in Turkey. Natural or raw canvas is simply canvas without any finishing or dying – canvas in its natural state.

Before the development of synthetic materials that has water-repellent qualities, gear and clothing was waterproofed by applying wax. This method has been found centuries ago by Scottish sailors, made it’s way through to our modern day and now extensively produced in Turkey as well.

Similar to leather, waxed canvas develops a unique patina over a lifetime of enduring abrasive conditions. Weathered and broken in creases and markings gives a nice character to the fabric. You may also re-wax it when needed.

Therefore, below we explain how to take care and protect your bags.

Also a woven fabric often made of nylon, using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. They are used in yacht sails, hot air balloons, wingsuits, kites, parachutes and high-quality camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, hammocks and other outdoor sports and clothing.

Nylon was developed in World War II as a replacement for silk in the production of parachutes.

The pebbled print nubuck that we use for Neu Land collection has special finish on both sides to protect this precious product. Although this should not prevent you from protecting your favorite friend by using proper nubuck and suede protective spray when needed.

If your bag gets wet, wipe it with a dry cloth and leave it to dry at normal room temperature, away from heat sources. If the leather gets dirty, wipe it off with a slightly moistened sponge and some mild soap. Wipe gently; do not rub. Cleaning light-colored leather may give it a slightly darker tone and also may soften the leather a bit.

The Journey Summer collection is made of natural canvas with ripstop so only spot clean your bag by using a damp sponge and a bit of soap. You can wash on gentle cold water, wrung out and hung to dry but please consider the heavy stitching details as you may lose the original form. Cold water will prevent the bag from shrinking. You may also iron lightly without getting in contact with the nylon ripstop façade.

Go easy on the cleaning of wax canvas that we use for The Journey collection. Never machine wash or dry clean as the fabric will release the protective coating. You can lightly brush off dirt with a brush.

If it got a major dirt use cold water in your shower with mild bar soap (not detergent), gently rub it with a sponge before rinsing and let it dry for your next adventure.

Re-wax when needed by using refinishing ointment, a bar or a tin of wax. Apply it with the help of a sponge and a little heat from a hair dryer that will soften the wax.

Made of nylon, this Is an easy spot clean material and you can treat is as same for natural and wax canvas. Do not use bleach, conditioners or stain removers. Do not iron.

For all cleaning purposes please consider how badly you want the stain to be removed and ask yourself “Can I live with it?” and play The Beatles song “Let it Be”J

Always test a small area first before cleaning and processing your bag.
